National Hospital Week dates back to 1921 when a magazine editor who hoped a communitywide celebration would alleviate public fears about the facilities. The idea caught on and today National Hospital Week is the nation’s largest annual health care event. Hospital Week is designed to unite hospitals and highlight their role in communities from coast to coast. The National Hospital Week theme for 2006 was “Where Miracles Happen Every Day.”
Carlinville Area Hospital celebrated Hospital Week with activities for both employees and the community. On Monday, May 8, The Carlinville Chamber of Commerce joined CAH in hosting a “Business After Hours” for the Hospital’s Physical Therapy Department and the Sleep Lab. The attendees were able to tour the departments and interact with the professional staff of the departments. Giveaways and refreshments were provided.
On Wednesday, May 10, the employees enjoyed a cookout and casual day. Administration started the day at 7:30 am serving breakfast to the employees from the night shift. Administration then cooked and served lunched to the day shift employees and then again for the evening shift employees at supper. Project Pride, the Hospital’s activity committee, gave away prizes to the employees during the meals.
The final event for Hospital Week was an Ice Cream Social for the Hospital employees on Friday afternoon sponsored by Project Pride. Employees were treated to 3 different flavors of ice cream and lots of delicious toppings. This was also an opportunity for employees to socialize. Employees also wore their favorite Baseball team shirts.
National Nurses Week was also celebrated during Hospital Week. Annually, National Nurses Week begins on May 6, marked as RN Recognition Day, and ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, founder of nursing as a modern profession. “Nurses: Strength, Commitment, Compassion” was the theme for 2006.
