CAH Auxiliary Sponsors Mini-Medical Days

As part of Mini-Medical Days, which was sponsored by the Hospital’s Auxiliary, approximately 110 Carlinville School District fifth graders toured Carlinville Area Hospital on October 4th and 5th.

Auxiliary member, Betty Pingleton, coordinated the event, which took the fifth graders through the Emergency Department, Cardiopulmonary, Laboratory, Radiology, Physical Therapy and Outpatient Services. Dunn’s Ambulance Service provided ambulances on site and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics gave the fifth graders the opportunity to sit in the ambulances and explained the use of the equipment in an emergency situation.

Students toured the Emergency Department where they were able to see patient rooms and equipment. They also took this opportunity to ask the nurses and attending physician questions and even received education on various emergency medical equipment.

Cardiopulmonary staff members educated the students on how they help physicians diagnose heart problems by performing EKGs. The students also viewed the new equipment for Pulmonary Function testing.

In the Laboratory, the fifth graders were able to see microscopes that are still used, in addition to automated and computerized equipment used in the Lab. They also enjoyed learning about the CT scanner in the Radiology department.

Physical Therapy challenged the students by testing their balance and flexibility, while Outpatient Services taught the importance of proper hand washing and how to help prevent the spread of germs.

Students listened closely, along with taking notes, so they will have the information needed when writing their essays about their visit to CAH. Auxiliary members will read the essays and select one winner from each class. The winners will then be recognized, along with their parents, teachers and principals, at a luncheon to be held at a later date.
