Hospital Auxiliary Recognizes Essay Winners

On October 4th and 5th, approximately 110 Carlinville fifth graders toured Carlinville Area Hospital as part of the Auxiliary’s Mini-Medical Days. Auxiliary member, Betty Pingleton, coordinated the event, which took the fifth graders through the Emergency Department, Cardiopulmonary, Laboratory, Radiology, Physical Therapy and Outpatient Services. Dunn’s Ambulance Service provided ambulances on site and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) and Paramedics.

Students were required to write an essay about their visit to Carlinville Area Hospital. Several Auxiliary members read and judged the essays, selecting one winner from each of the four classes. According to Betty Pingleton, the selection process was very difficult.

Winners were Darci Bilbruck, Ethan Dixon, Justin Kendall, and Molly Reiher. The essay winners were each presented with Golden Dollars and a Certificate of Achievement by Betty Pingleton. The students were accompanied to the recognition luncheon by their teachers, parents and grandparents. Also in attendance were Auxiliary members, volunteers, Hospital staff whose departments participated in Mini-Medical Days and Hospital Administration.

All of the students had an opportunity to read their winning essays that explained what they learned during the visit to the hospital. There were references to the blood cell counting machine in the Laboratory, the CT Scanner in the Radiology Department and how Cardiopulmonary deals with testing the heart and lungs of a patient. The students also noted how the Infection Control Nurse used a special light to see how well they washed their hands.

Most of the students concluded their essays by explaining how interesting everything was and how much they learned about the many services provided by Carlinville Area Hospital.

Special thanks go to Dunn’s Ambulance Service, all of CAH’s employees who participated in Mini-Medical Days as well as the Auxiliary members and volunteers who served as tour guides and essay judges.
