Visionary and effective leadership is a key aspect of any organization’s success. CAH+C’s Executive Team members have been exhibiting those traits over the last few years, and the organization’s Board of Directors wants to ensure that continues into the years ahead. Recently, the Board unanimously voted to enter multi-year employment contracts with CEO, Brian Burnside and his Executive Team in an effort to recognize the accomplishments of the last several years and to promote the team’s stability into the future. The terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

Chairman Dennis Pickrel said, “The Board believes that CAH+C is in very good hands with this team. It has been remarkable seeing their passion for leading our organization and their caring for our community combine into making CAH+C a very special place.” He went on to say that the professional skill of the team was a key factor in the Board’s recent decision to terminate services of the out-of-state Hospital Management company after 20 years. “We are fortunate to have the level of experience and expertise to effectively operate our hospital and clinic system with this team. This allows them and the Board to make the best decisions locally about the future of healthcare in our community.”

Since Burnside’s arrival in 2020, CAH+C has rapidly advanced through his vision for healthcare across the community. The organization has more than doubled the volume of patients it serves, and it has increased patient access by opening clinics in Virden and Gillespie, while continuing services to Girard and Carlinville. Burnside has also brokered strong relationships with organizations like Springfield Clinic in support of local services. Each of the Executives supports their respective operational teams while also contributing to overall organizational strategy.

Chief Nursing Officer/Quality Officer (CNO/CQO), Jessica Barkley has led the nursing staff to elevate the complexity of care that is possible at CAH+C. Specialty Services Executive, Tanya Kessinger has been instrumental in the development of more than 30 Specialists providing local care. Chief Operating Officer, Tracy Koster has positively impacted the organization’s culture and support services. Jay Hodges, Chief Financial Officer and Jerod Cottingham, Chief Information Officer provide leadership to key functions.

CNO/CQO Barkley stated: “It is nice to know that the Board recognizes this team’s commitment to our patients and community. I know that each of us take the responsibility we have to heart each day and it’s wonderful to know that the Board has this level of confidence in us.”

Burnside concluded, “It takes a team effort to operate a successful rural health system. We are so fortunate to have an expert team of Medical Staff members, future-focused Board Members, and a compassionate staff of teammates that work together each day to care for our communities. CAH+C is indeed a special place, and every member of this Executive team is committed to its success.”
