Expert Care, Close to Home
Carlinville Area Hospital & Clinics is a Comprehensive Rural Health System serving the residents of Macoupin County, Illinois, and beyond. We offer 25 licensed inpatient beds — including an Advanced Care Unit — alongside an Outpatient Specialty Clinic, Walk-in Clinic, and four Rural Health Clinics. Our services span inpatient, outpatient, and emergency care, including medical, surgical, and pediatric admissions. We also provide advanced diagnostic and rehabilitation services such as imaging, cardiopulmonary care, behavioral health, Swing Bed, and physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

Our active medical staff includes specialists in family practice, internal medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics, and geriatrics. Through our Outpatient Specialty Clinic, patients have access to dozens of providers representing 20 specialties—all available locally.

Growing to Serve a Better You
In recent years, Carlinville Area Hospital & Clinics has grown from a small, acute care hospital to a model rural health center for providers across the country. Beginning with a renewed and increased focus on the Rural Health Clinics, the hospital expanded with the opening of the Virden Clinic, bringing much-needed primary care services to the small community.
This initiative also led to the expansion of the Outpatient Specialty Clinics, bringing area specialists to provide outpatient services in a familiar environment close to home. This change has both expanded the hospital’s clinical capabilities and created monumental opportunities for patients and providers alike, offering care across 20 medical specialties.
Finally, Carlinville Area Hospital & Clinics launched the Advanced Care Unit (ACU) in January 2024, allowing providers to treat more acutely ill patients who, just a year prior, would have required admission to a large, tertiary care center farther from their homes. Employing a tele-nocturnist, a telecardiologist, and hospitalists to oversee the hospital’s nursing staff, the ACU offers a way to keep patients close to home during their recovery.
This growth and advancement of medical services in Carlinville and surrounding communities underscore the mission of Carlinville Area Hospital & Clinics, ensuring the hospital will continue connecting patients to expert care for generations to come and serving as a model for rural healthcare facilities across the country.
Emergency Care & Rehabilitation
We offer a 24-hour STAT Stroke and STAT Heart designated Emergency Department, staffed by experienced emergency medicine physicians. For recovery after surgery, stroke, or extended illness, our Swing Bed Program provides skilled nursing and rehabilitation care—whether your initial hospitalization was here or elsewhere.
